The Evolution of Boxing Games: Why Undisputed (2024) Struggles to Match Fight Night: Champion

Boxing video games have long been a staple of sports gaming, allowing players to step into the ring with legendary fighters and experience the sweet science firsthand. From the arcade simplicity of the 1980s to the intricate mechanics of EA Sports’ Fight Night series, boxing games have evolved dramatically over the years. However, the much-anticipated Undisputed (2024) has faced criticism for failing to surpass the heights achieved by Fight Night: Champion (2011), a game widely regarded as the pinnacle of the genre.

The Golden Era of Boxing Games

The journey of boxing video games began with titles like Punch-Out!! in the 1980s, offering simple but entertaining gameplay. The 1990s saw a push for realism with games like Evander Holyfield’s Real Deal Boxing (1992) and Knockout Kings (1998-2003). These titles brought licensed fighters and improved graphics to the forefront, paving the way for EA Sports’ Fight Night series.

The Fight Night franchise revolutionized boxing games, particularly with the introduction of Total Punch Control, allowing precise punches via analog sticks. The series peaked with Fight Night Champion (2011), which introduced cinematic storytelling, advanced graphics, and realistic gameplay mechanics. Its story mode, “Champion Mode,” was a standout, combining narrative drama with immersive gameplay—a first for the genre.

Enter Undisputed (2024): A Long-Awaited Revival

After over a decade without a major boxing game, Undisputed (formerly eSports Boxing Club) emerged as a beacon of hope for fans of the sport. Developed by Steel City Interactive, it promised to bring boxing back into the gaming spotlight with modern visuals, a massive roster of fighters, and advanced mechanics.

Released in 2024, Undisputed features an impressive roster, including Tyson Fury, Muhammad Ali, and Canelo Álvarez, alongside legendary trainers like Teddy Atlas. The game also emphasizes realism with advanced footwork, stamina management, and a variety of punches. Despite its ambitious goals, however, Undisputed has been met with mixed reviews, with many fans drawing unflattering comparisons to Fight Night Champion.

Where Undisputed (2024) Falls Short

Gameplay Mechanics - Fight Night Champion delivered intuitive controls and a balance between arcade fun and simulation realism. The Total Punch Control system allowed precise and fluid execution of punches, creating a satisfying gameplay loop.

In contrast, Undisputed struggles with clunky mechanics. While its focus on footwork and punch variety is admirable, the controls often feel unresponsive, making the gameplay less fluid and engaging. The lack of polish in animations, such as punches not landing convincingly or fighters moving awkwardly, detracts from the immersion.

Graphics and Presentation - Despite being over a decade old, Fight Night Champion remains visually impressive, thanks to its attention to detail in fighter models, arenas, and damage effects. The sweat, blood, and facial expressions in Fight Night added to its realism and cinematic quality.

While Undisputed boasts modern graphics, it lacks the same level of polish. Fighters often look uncanny, and the environments feel static. The presentation also lacks the cinematic flair that made Fight Night Champion stand out.

Story and Engagement - Fight Night Champion set itself apart with its “Champion Mode,” which told the gritty story of Andre Bishop, a boxer overcoming corruption and personal struggles. This mode added emotional depth and gave players a reason to stay invested beyond regular matches.

Undisputed does not include a narrative-driven mode, relying solely on career and multiplayer options. While the career mode offers customization and progression, it fails to capture the drama and excitement that Fight Night Champion provided.

Polish and Consistency - Fight Night Champion benefited from EA’s resources and experience, resulting in a polished and cohesive game. In contrast, Undisputed has been criticized for bugs, inconsistent AI, and a lack of overall refinement. These issues give the impression of an unfinished product, despite its lengthy development period.

The Legacy of Fight Night Champion and the Path Forward

Fight Night Champion remains the gold standard of boxing games due to its perfect blend of realism, accessibility, and storytelling. Its ability to cater to both casual players and hardcore fans has allowed it to endure as a classic.

Undisputed (2024) represents an earnest effort to revive the genre but falls short in several key areas. While it brings fresh ideas and a passion for authenticity, its lack of polish and engaging modes keeps it from surpassing or even matching the legacy of Fight Night Champion.

For boxing video games to reach their former glory, developers must learn from Fight Night Champion’s successes: intuitive controls, cinematic presentation, and a polished, immersive experience. Undisputed is a step in the right direction, but it serves as a reminder that the sweet science of boxing games is about more than just throwing punches—it’s about creating a compelling and unforgettable experience.
