"The Marvelous": How Allissa Maldonado Turned a Superhero Nickname Into Pan Am Gold

There is a particular kind of fighter who does not apologize for being the smaller woman in the room. Allissa Maldonado — Allissa, two L's, despite what autocorrect and a few databases try to do — built her whole identity around that fact. Comic books. A Captain America–adjacent alter ego. A walk around that sits roughly five pounds off strawweight. And a fighting style that treats height as a problem for the other girl to solve.

On September 15, 2026, in Monterrey, that persona stopped being a regional prospect and became a continental result. Representing the United States at the 2026 IMMAF Pan American Championships, Maldonado won the senior women's strawweight tournament championship, stopping Mexico's Aranza Velasco by injury at 2:19 of round three in the seniors finals. Per Tapology, the finish moved her amateur MMA record to 6–0.

Velasco, competing for Mexico, had advanced via a split decision in the seniors semi-finals the day prior. Maldonado’s final win is logged as an injury stoppage, but make no mistake she pushed the pace that led to the injury stoppage.
